If you have never painted outdoors this is your opportunity.  Plein air painting provides a fresh and different way of looking at how we process what we "see."   It is gaining enormous popularity in the USA and is a great supplement to painting in the studio. The first lesson will be at the Art Center with a brief demonstration, checkout of equipment and supplies, followed by each student painting a trial run landscape on the Art Center grounds.  Subsequent sessions will be outdoor locations near the Art Center.  All media are welcome.  Students will need to supply a small portable easel with a limited palette. Feel free to contact Joseph with any questions.

We will work in the classroom from your sketches or photo reference.  I will also provide photo references.  My demonstrations in each class will be in acrylic but will apply to all mediums.    Some painting experience is necessary.

Learn to organize and edit scenes to achieve better compositions, shapes, values, colors and light.  Get more expression out of your brush strokes.  Put pizazz into your paintings.   Learn some basic procedures to improve your skill and confidence while building your paintings step by step.  I'll share some tips in drawing which in itself can improve your painting.  My method of teaching is to do a demonstration painting and then work with each student to understand the techniques.  I help each student to work out their painting in their individual style.

All media are welcome.

WORKSHOP B

Do you ever find yourself painting endless details and still have a composition that doesn't work or the shapes are uninteresting and the values are off?  That's where development sketches come into play.  They are small, brief and bold.  The key is to work in a series developing the idea without wasting time on details.  I work on 5x7 or 6x8 panels or bristol paper.  The idea is to be bold and willing to do several of the same subject varying the composition and colors.  You can eliminate the fear of trying new ideas because so little time is invested.  It's fun and I will show and tell the process and coach each student in doing it.

 About the Artist

imageJoseph Melançon MFA, NWS

Joseph Melançon is a versatile artist whose range of work includes watercolor, acrylic and oil painting as well as collage and sculpture. In his work he interprets lifelong interests such as antique toys, the American Indian, landscape and the figure using abstraction as well as expressive realism. Joseph's works are very personal with a passion for process, composition and the painterly surface. In painting he dissects, simplifies and freely interprets what he sees and feels through the use of composition, shapes, line and color.

Joseph, who holds an MFA degree, taught for many years at Eastfield College in Dallas and Texas Woman’s University in addition to giving workshops and Lecture/Demos across the US.  Joseph’s design and dimensional production work as curator of exhibits in two science and history museums and his years of building sets and props for television, print media, and industry contributed greatly to Joseph’s extensive knowledge of methods and materials.
