African Nouveau
Sculptures of Woodrow Nash

Woodrow Nash’s signature style, which he has coined “African Nouveau”, combines 15th century Benin and 18th century French Nouveau characteristics utilizing stoneware, earthenware, terracotta and porcelain to achieve striking embodiments of the human soul and sensuality through expression, complex symbolism and sophisticated aesthetics. “I’m looking for that expression that cuts across a cultural grain”, says Nash. That search lead him to the very foundation of mankind - Africa and world tribal culture. The adornment of the human form in Africa in particular, was one of the ways that cultures interacted with each other and many different tribes and groups can be recognized by their jewelry and body art.

The work of Woodrow Nash is collected by everyone from working professionals to affluent sports figures and entertainment superstars.

A Community Project by Jackie Peters Cully

Leaf|Textile|Purpose is a community project designed and orchestrated by Jackie Peters Cully, a resident of Sarasota and renowned textile designer. For over a year, community members from across Sarasota have gathered at Art Center Sarasota to collage leaves with the brightly colored printed papers from Jackie Peters Cully’s textile designs. These leaves will be displayed all together in a suspended installation reminiscent of the falling leaves of autumn. This process has created a bond between the participants who come regularly to the art making sessions and the artist. It was the intention of Jackie Peters Cully to include the community in bringing her vision to reality. Each person who participated in the project will be recognized on the gallery wall. Dancers from Fuzion Dance will be at the opening reception to interpret the work through dance.

Black Box Project

Installation by Zachary See
Exhibition is SOLD OUT!

Black Box Projects, a student project initiative, is an opportunity for current students and recent graduates of the local art colleges to have an exhibition in a gallery setting. Student’s exhibition opportunities are usually confined to spaces “on campus”.  Art Center Sarasota recognizes the importance of showcasing these emerging artists by offering time, space and funding to help a young artist realize a special vision.

The inaugural project is an installation by Ringling College of Art and Design senior, Zachary See. See’s work is an exploration of the relationship man has with nature.
