Gallery 1: Child's Play

February 28, 2013 - April 26, 2013
“A child is a curly dimpled lunatic.”  ~Ralph Waldo Emerson
The notion of innocence in play is often taken as a given. Who would assume that a group of children could conjure up ideas about violence, deception, and emotional cruelty? Where do these ideas begin? Are they imprinted in our genetic code before birth, or are they an outcome of nurture (or lack thereof) and environment. The taunts and jeers often heard on playgrounds and school buses can result in a form of unrestrained brutality that lingers in the hearts and minds of the victims long after school has ended.
If one were to truly reflect upon their formative years, they were most likely a bully, victim, bystander or up stander-with the later being the least popular group. Artists, being the eyes of the world, carry these experiences in their collective memories and replay them in various materials and settings. Some objects represent joy, other works, images of confusion and sorrow.

Jurors’ Statement
“Simply Original” provided an incredible opportunity for local artists to truly express themselves in their chosen medium and I appreciate the invitation to jury this show.
Every good work of art is dependent on technical skill, craftsmanship, creativity, use of color and composition. It’s also important for an artist to break the rules, take risks, and express their heart and soul and “Simply Original” is the perfect opportunity to do so.
-Mary Roff, Former Director of Art Center Manatee
Work cannot be ignored. An artist must show their work with the same energy, drive and understanding as when they picked up the tools of art making. An artist must know the language and narrative of their work. This should be present at any level or experience of the artist. These are the elements that I look for in a piece of art.
-Patrick Lindhardt, Master Printer, working artist, and Professor of  Printmaking at Ringling College of Art + Design
